Moscatello di Taggia, the Popes wine

Moscatello GrapeThe Moscatello di Taggia is an aromatic white berry wine variety cultivated in the West Ligurian Riviera since 1500. Its importance and its appreciation is clearly expressed in many historical documents dated XVI cenury as it was a constant guest in nobles and popes table. That’s why it is called “the wine of kings” and “the wine of Popes”.
Please, don’t expect that putting on the table such a so historically relevant product is quite easy because starting from 1700, the Moscatello di Taggia cultivation was quickly replaced by olive trees and the vine almost totally disappeared in 1800 due to the grapevines serious illnesses.
Thanks to the passion of present winemakers as Eros Mammoliti, the University of Turin and the Grugliasco CNR (National Research Center) support, after more than 10 years, we got the goal. Starting from few plants found in old grapevines we finally find a virus free and sane vine that allowed us to create the first experimental grapevine used till now for study and research. From these few and new plants we got the propagation material to build some new grapevines, including ours.
To protect and enhance all the research work and the passion for this product, the “associazione produttori moscatello di Taggia” (moscatello di taggia’s producers association) was created and we are one of the founders.

Late grape harvest (Vendemmia tardiva)
For this kind of Moscatello di Taggia, grapes are cropped “surmature” (over mellowed) on the plant. In this way you get a product reaching a good alcoholic degree in a natural way and it still have available sugar to give to the palate a nice sweety sensation.
The production of this variety of Moscatello di Taggia, great for its fantastic fruit flavours typical for the mature moscato, has many technical problems due to the very high sugar concentration and to the fragility of the grapes at the limit of maturation.
Specific attentions must be adopted in the field to preserve the grapes from any physical or biological damage allowing them to get the right maturation. Also the wine-making process needs specific attentions and we are still studying it to make it better and better.
As wine-making way, we choose the “vinificazione in bianco” (white wine-making) with a quick maceration on the peels under controlled temperature.
This choice will allow you to get the best flavours and scients of Moscatello.

Tasting features:
Color: intense straw yellow
Scient: peach, tropical fuits, citrus fruits with some aromatic herbs
Flavour: sweet, distinctive and soft

Matching
We start from the most traditional matchings like pastries and aged cheeses. This trilogy provides fantastic and unexpected feelings matching the dishes based on raw fish and mainly the shellfish like the Sanremo red shrimp.

Moscatello di taggia
This is a dry wine where the natural acidity of the vine stands out, giving to the palate a nice freshness feeling. As wine-making metod, we chose the white winemaking with a maceration on the peels under controlled temperature. The tasting is inebriating as the sense of smell is pleased by typical aromatic smells of moscato and at the same time, in the mouth, it looks dry and with a good acidity, ready to give that cleaning in mouth very appreciated with fish dishes

Tasting features:
Color: intense straw yellow
Scient: peach, citrus fruits, tropical fuits and dog rose (wild rose)
Flavour: balanced, fresh and a little bit savory

Matching
Fish based dishes, mainly shellfish
